13、errenamedDongfengAutomotiveCpationin1992.InMarch1978ShannxiAutomotiveWkswassetupinXi’an.MeoverthreenewfirmsemergedasimptantautomotivevehicleproductionsitesinTianjinShenyangWuhan.Duringthisperiodmostoftheprovincesautonomo

14、usregionseventhecitiesofChinasetuplocalautomotiveproduction.By1980thenumberofautomotiveenterpriseshadrisento2379–consistingof56vehiclemanufacturers129repairplants24motcyclemakers33motenginemakers2076partsproducers.In1980

15、222288unitsofautomotivevehicleswereproducedofwhich135500weretrucks5418werecars(seeTable1)accountingf61percent2.4percentofthetotaloutputrespectively.Howeverowingtotheabsenceofcompetitionallproductionunitsranatlowlevelsofp

16、roductivityefficiency.Centralplanningalsocreatedafurtherproblemofrestrictedproductscopeintermsoflimitedproductlines.Theresultwasafragmentedproductionsystemwithsevereovercapacityinautoproductionnationwideacterisedbyproduc

17、tionatlevelsbelowminimumefficientscaleineachprovince.TheopeningupofChina’seconomybroughtunprecedentedopptunitieschallengesfitsautomotiveindustry.Domesticdemfcars(initiallydominatedbydemfromthegovernmentsectfofficialuse)r

18、oserapidlyinthe1980s.HoweverChina’svehicleproducersweretruckmakersratherthancarmakers.ThecarindustrywasaminpartofvehicleproductionduringthefirstthreedecadesofChina’ssocialisteconomywasunabletomeettheincreasingdemfcars.Si
