1、In recent years, metapbor has become a focus of interest in cognitivelinguistics. The researchers hold that metaphor is a fundamental way ofhuman cognition rather than just a rhetorical device in traditional view. Inthis
2、 paper, three traditional theories of metaphor (the substitution theory,the comparison theory and the interaction theory) are briefly reviewed anddiscussed. Totally different from them, cognitive linguistics holds abrand
3、-new philosophical ground—experientialism and maintains thatmetaphor is pervasive in thought and action as well as in language.In order to clearly locate the metaphorical concept in the panorama ofhuman cognition, the th
4、eoretical framework of cognitive semantics isbriefly discussed. The mechanism of conceptual metaphor consisting ofmatching and similarity, and four features of metaphor are examined.As a case study, this paper intends to
5、 put forward a kind of method inlexical comparison and lays emphasis on applying Lakoff's classification ofmetaphors to the analysis of the time concept underlying Chinese andEnglish lexicons. Lakoff's classification, in
6、cluding orientational,ontological and structural metaphors, is introduced and ways of applyinghis classification to this study are discussed.The analysis shows that Chinese and English lexicons are really awealth of data
7、 under the cover of which metaphorical concept of time ispervasive and can be traced back to a limited set of clusters. Those mainconceptual metaphors concerning time are classified and explained withsamples from English
8、 and Chinese lexicons and the differences inunderstanding them are disclosed through the analysis of those relevantlexemes. Finally, the causes of the differences are explored and theimplication of this kind of lexical c
