1、II IV Abstract Pun, as one of the commonly used figures of speech, is widely used in all kinds of literary forms. It is the unique language art and reveals the wisdom and cultural trait of the nation. Pun translation is

2、 more than a pure language translation problem, and becomes a difficulty and hotspot in translation study. There are many scholars actively devote themselves to pun translation practice, they study from the relative th

3、eories to probe the secrets of pun translation and make some achievements. But by now, there are rarely someone studying form the translation theory aspects. The study of pun translation strategy mainly focuses on the

4、descriptive strategies, and it lacks of translation theoretical guidance. The thesis applies Cultural Translation Theory of Bassnett as theoretical support, Chinese homophonic pun as raw material to study the pun tran

5、slatability and its translation strategies. We try to explore the internal relationship of Cultural Translation Theory and pun translation to give some reference for future pun study. Bassnett‘s Cultural Translation Th

6、eory is a theory about culture and translation. Under the influence of cultural hot, Bassnett absorbs some nutrition of theories to form a thorough theory, which includes mainly three aspects: cultural function equivale

7、nce; cultural manipulation and cultural construction. She thinks the aim of translation is cultural communication; culture manipulates translation and translation constructs culture. Chinese homophonic pun has abund

8、ant material, which involves classic literature, Xiehouyu, taboo, name, ceremony, etc. Since English and Chinese belong to two completely different language systems and their cultural traditions vary widely, plus there

9、is no unified criterion of pun translation, untranslatability is on the strong position. From the aspect of translatability limits and criticism of ―faithfulness‖, we summarize two strategies of pun translation – cultu

10、ral function equivalence strategy and cultural manipulation and construction strategy. We make some endeavor of Chinese homophonic pun translation practice under these two strategies, and bring out three principles of

11、 pun translation: the aim of translation is culture communication; translation can prolong the life of source text in time and space; as long as we actively take part in the translation practice, we are gaining. Althou

12、gh we translate some puns, the effect still needs to be verified by the target readers. Also, it is innovative to bring culture factor into translational territory, but if it will kill the essence of translation still

13、needs in-depth study. The thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter 1 is the introduction of the whole thesis, which contains background and motivation, research questions and objectives, significance, methodology and t

14、he organization of the thesis. Chapter 2 gives a general literature review of pun study and Cultural Translation Theory. It contains previous studies both home and aboard. Chapter 3 and chapter 4 are the cores of the the

15、sis. Chapter 3 begins with the brief introduction of Susan Bassnett and her Cultural Translation Theory. It contains two parts: theoretical basis of Cultural Translation Theory and three essentials of the theory: cultur

16、al function equivalence, cultural manipulation and cultural construction. Chapter 4 is the main body. The analysis is unfolded in this chapter. It firstly gives a general description of Chinese homophonic pun class

17、ification and its cultural connotation. Later, the thesis summarizes three barriers, discusses translatability limits and the criterion of pun translation. Then, it introduces two strategies: cultural function equivale

18、nce strategy and cultural manipulation and construction strategy to carry out in Chinese homophonic pun translation practice. Finally, it provides three principles under the inspiration of Cultural Translation Theory.

19、 Chapter 5 is the conclusion part, in which some main points are summarized, and the limitations are proposed, also expectations of future research are presented in this chapter. Key words: Chinese homophonic pun; Bassne
