2、 displayed vigorous explanatory power in metaphor research. Comparison of them reveals that each of them focuses on different aspect of metaphor and they are complementary. Therefore, this thesis, by making use of their
3、respective advantages, employs the former to explain the translation of conventional metaphor, and the latter, novel metaphor. With regard to the selection of samples, two factors are taken into consideration. Lu Xun’s w
4、orks are profound in thoughts and teeming with metaphors. Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang, as famous translators in China, enjoy high reputations for their great faithfulness to the original in translation. Therefore, taking
5、 their translated version of Lu Xun’s novels as research objective is of much practical significance and reference value. This thesis, with the English versions of Call to Arms and Wandering as corpus, according to the d
6、escriptive approach of translation studies, firstly divides metaphors found into conventional metaphors and novel ones, each of which is further categorized into ontological, orientational, and structural ones. In this w
7、ay, a metaphor system is established. Based on this, statistical results as well as examples are analyzed, and translation strategy within each metaphor category is explored to obtain generalizations of metaphor translat
8、ion. Furthermore, it employs two-domain mapping in CMT and four-space projection in CIT to explain the translation processes of different metaphors. And finally, the general process of translation is summarized. This the
9、sis maintains that translation process incorporates de-integration and reproduction. The basic conceptual mapping penetrates the whole process, while conceptual integration provides dynamic, creative blending, constantly
10、 optimizing the translated version. Using cognitive theories and empirical method to explore metaphor translation provides metaphor translation studies with not only a brand-new theoretical perspective but also feasible
11、 practical techniques. This will help deepen the understanding of the mechanism and essence as far as metaphor translation and general translation are concerned. Key words: Metaphor, metaphor translation, cognition, conc
