3、arefully examined. Modern scientist, who is more a technician than a philosopher, has little opportunity to indulge in the fundamental problems relating to the very concepts which he applies, but a historico-critical ana
4、lysis of the basic conceptions in science is of paramount importance, not merely for the professional philosopher or historian of science. Attention on the ideas of force was called for by the needs to explain motion. Pe
5、ople in ancient world applied the sensation of muscular power to objects in motion to tell why they can change their positions in the space, thus a belief was established that inanimate things affected the confronting ob
6、jects through pull or push just like humans. However, the concept of force coming from anthropomorphism, though quite convincing in both scientific theories and daily practice, clashed with mathematical reasoning and exp
7、eriment methods respected by modern science, due to its problematic metaphysical nature. For centuries, scientists from various fields had argued about the nature of the concept, before 3 major schools brought forth thei
8、r explanations based on theological, dynamism, and relation. Contemporary science shows increasing supports to the last one, indicting that force is merely a descriptive term with no empirical content. During the dialec
9、tical process, the concept of force, having experienced many times of reforms and restructures, completed itself and become a scientific notion with a clear connotation by developing from the ancient hylozoism idea entan
10、gled in the net of spirit and material into intermediary tool in reasoning that can be eliminated from science. The study of the concept is not only of academic importance for history of science, but can serve as window
