2、008).Howeverwedonotyetsufficientlyunderstwhysomepeopleinaleadershipsituationchoosetoinfluenceothersthroughethicalbehavismannerwhileotherschooselessethicalbehavis.Traitsarelikelytoplayaroleinthis.Sofarhoweverresearchhasma
3、inlyfocusedonconsequencesratherthantheantecedentsofethicalleaderbehavithoughtheydoespredictindividualdifferenceswillplayaroleinethicalleadership(BrownTrevino,2006).Expingourknowledgeoftheantecedentsofethicalleadershipisc
4、rucialbecauseonlywhensuchantecedentsareknownganizationscanpurposefullyinfluencetheiontrainingdevelopmentofsuchleadersinturnbenefitfromthepositiveoutcomesofethicalleadership.Fexampleifethicalbehaviisassociatedtostabletrai
5、tsganizationsmaywishtomespecificallyaimtoleaderswhoarehighonthesetraitstostimulateethicalbehavionthewkplace.Previousliteraturehasproposedthatvariousindividualdifferencesarelikelytobeassociatedwithethicalleadershipincludi
6、nglevelofcognitivemaldevelopmentconcernfpeoplereliabilityresponsibility(cf.BassSteidlmeier1999Brownetal.2005BrownTrevino2006DeHooghDenHartog2008Turneretal.2002).FexampleDeHooghDenHartog(2008)foundthathighlysociallyrespon
7、sibleleadersareperceivedasmeethical.AlsoMayeretal.(2008)foundthatleadermalidentityisrelatedtoethicalleadership.Inthisstudywewillfocusonthe‘‘BigFive’’personalitytraits.The‘‘BigFive’’arebelievedtobebasicunderlyingtraitdime
8、nsionsofpersonality(e.g.Goldberg1990)havebeenrecognizedasgeicallybasedrelativelystablecrossculturegeneralizable(e.g.McCraeCosta1997).AnotherargumenttofocusontheBigFiveisthatintegritytestsarenotclearlydistinguishablefromt
9、heBigFivedimensionsmeasures(Becker1998SacketWanek1996).Integritywasfoundagreeablenessemotionalstability.AlsoMayeretal.(2007)foundthatagreeablenessconscientiousnessneuroticismwerethethreemostimptantleadertraitsfcreatingaj
10、usticeclimate.Belowwefocusonthethreetraitsfwhichstrongtheeticallinkageswithethicalleaderbehavisexist(conscientiousnessagreeablenessemotionalstability)inthetwostudieswealsoincludecontrolfthetworemainingBigFivetraits(extra
11、versionopenness).ConscientiousnessThetraitconscientiousnessconsistsoftwomainfacetsnamelydependabilityreflectingbeingthoughdutifulresponsibleganizedachievementrepresentingthecapacitytowkhardmeetchallenges(Digman1990McCrae
12、Costa1987MountBarrick1995).Highlyconscientiousindividualstendtothinkcarefullybefeactingadherecloselytotheirmalobligationsperceivedresponsibilities(CostaMcCrae1992).Thisisrelevantfleaderstobeperceivedasethical.Ethicallead
13、ersbehaveconsistentlysetclearguidelinesfappropriatebehaviclarifywhatisexpectedofemployeesthusconscientiousnessisexpectedtobepositivelyrelatedtoethicalleadership(Brownetal.2005DeHooghDenHartog2008).Byactingdutifullythemse
14、lvesleadershighonconscientiousnessarelikelytobeseenasrolemodelsofappropriatebehavi.ThisisinlinewiththesociallearningframewkBrowal.(2005)appliedtoethicalleadership.Alsoconscientiousnessreflectsthetendencytoadheretocodesof
15、conductfollowprotocolspolicies(Costaetal.1991).Indoingsoleadershighonconscientiousnessarelikelytofollowtheruleswktransparently.Inadditionhighlyconscientiousindividualspreferpersonalresponsibility(Wittetal.2002).Thiscombi
16、nationofmodelingresponsibilitybeingtransparentislikelytotranslateinleaders’carefulattentiontoclarifyingresponsibilitiesdemssothatemployeesunderstwhatgoesonknowwhatisexpectedofthem.Conscientiousnessindividualsseesharingre
